i5 vs i7:
which do you need?

For most users, Core i5 is the sweet spot — fast enough for multitasking, Office, browsing, and video calls. Core i7 makes sense for heavy workloads like video editing, development, or running virtual machines.

WHICH ONE?

Pick by use case.

Students — i5

Documents, web research, video calls, light multitasking. i5 handles all of this comfortably. Save the budget difference for a better screen or more storage.

Business / Office — i5

Excel, email, CRM, Teams/Zoom, 20+ browser tabs. i5 with 16GB RAM handles all of it. i7 is unnecessary for typical office workloads.

Video editing — i7

Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects. These applications are CPU-intensive and benefit from the extra cores and clock speed of i7.

Development — i7

Compiling code, running Docker containers, VMs, IDEs with multiple projects. i7’s extra threads make a real difference in build times.

Budget — i5

If budget matters, i5 gives you 90% of the performance at 50–60% of the price. Spend the savings on 16GB RAM and a bigger SSD instead.

Avoid Celeron/Pentium

Budget processors like Celeron and Pentium are too slow for anything beyond basic web browsing. Not recommended for 2026 use.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is i5 enough for everyday use?
Yes. Core i5 handles Office, browsing, video calls, and multitasking comfortably. Most CLS customers choose i5.
When should I choose i7?
Video editing, software development, running virtual machines, or heavy multitasking with many demanding apps simultaneously.
Is i7 worth the extra cost?
Only if your workload genuinely needs it. For office, study, and general use, i5 with 16GB RAM is the better value.
What about i3?
i3 is entry-level. Fine for very basic use but we recommend i5 as the minimum for a smooth 2026 experience.
Should I avoid Celeron/Pentium?
Yes. Too slow for modern use. Budget i5 refurbished laptops from $280 outperform new Celeron laptops at $500+.
What grades are available?
Premium, Excellent, Good, Acceptable. All grades same 20-point inspection, same 12-month warranty.
Do CLS laptops come with 16GB RAM?
Most do. 16GB is the standard on CLS refurbished laptops. See our 8GB vs 16GB RAM guide.
